With an intend to check a few more Gunma 100 mountains I went to Mikuni Togei last week. Actual trailhead is near the mouth of old Mikuni tunnel on national route 17 and it was a bit confusing as I failed to see the small notice posted on a gate cordoning off the approach to old tunnel. One has to walk on approach to new tunnel and pass through an opening (door) to get onto old tunnel entrance and trail head. Once there the trail was well marked and easy to follow and the body was warmed ip as I reached Mikuni Togei where a shrine ( 御阪三社神社) offers an open view. Clouds and fog was still moving up from valley so I continued ahead to the broad and well rounded peak of Mikuni. Lots of wooden steps which were icy with frozen frost slowed down me a bit but soon I overtook a couple whose car I saw parked. They were also planning to go till Daigenta and we crossed each other a number of times during the day. Last part of Mikuni had lot of loose gravel but it was stabilised with wooden squares. The steps looked frozen and it felt safer to walk in gravel instead. Mikuni peak offers a nice view of the mountains and I could make out faint outlines of Fuji too besides other mountains towards Tokyo and Yamanashi. From Mikuni and trail drops and climbs again on a gentle ridge (Gunma Long Trail) a number of times steadily gaining elevation till I reached Sankaku Yama. Though Daigenta looked close but it’s still a little walk with some snow covered trail. There were still clouds over the Tanigawa ridge and I could only see the Tairapyo and Sen no Kura mountains when it cleared up later at peak of Daigenta. After a leisurely long stop at peak to enjoy warm and clear weather I returned the way I came back. For once I thought maybe I should walk up to the Tairapyo no ie hut to complete this part of Gunma Long Trail but that would involve adding more kms and a couple of hours to today’s hike. Maybe I would talk again someday from Tairapyo in summer. Weather cleared up more on the retun and I could easily see snow covered Naeba and Azuma ,Asama and Yatsugatake. Looking back I found Anogagawa dake another mountain I need to climb once there is more snow. It’s one of those mountains which can only be climbed in winter as there is no proper trail and it’s covered with bushes in other seasons. Frost on wooden steps had melted by now and I descended safely to the parking lot a little faster. ぐんま百名山49, 50 Mantenbashi no yu Onsen *****
