When I first heard of this mountain which could only be climbed in a short window in winter I wondered why. Now I know the reason - impassable thickets(藪 yabu) in summer and precipitous ridges which turn into snow cornices (雪庇 seppi) in full winter. There are two routes - one begins at Tanigawa PA on Kanetsu Expressway following a TEPCO patrol route to one of the pylons following the Mizukami ridge. The more popular ones begins at a car park for hotoleiwa iwa route to Azumayama. In thirty minutes it would take you to the ridge where you back track towards Mt yoshigasawa the first peak of the day. There would be oke more peak before one reaches Mt Tenshiyama. Things become interesting and tougher after this point, there are about four consecutive rocky peaks topped with groves of native Japanese black cypress trees with hardly any space to pass through safely. Just the last one has a rope to help you descend. From Mitsuiwa-yama to Anogawa-dake, the climb should is relatively easy with a couple of ups and downs. Final note other than the technical part between Tenshiyama and Mitsuiwa the rest of route is not that difficult. One just have to be careful of hard icy parts, soft snow tree-holes, and omnipresent cornices in eastward side of ridge. I think it’s safer to walk on the western side whenever in doubt. I saw quite a few big holes in the snow, so it seems though the upper surface looks tough it’s quite soft and hollow at places. ぐんま百名山 #57
