I started hiking at the bus stop in Akizuki and headed across the Kaho Alps to Umamiyama.
The colors of the foliage were wonderful and many places were lit up with a golden light.
I made a loop by heading down the old path towards the Egawa dam. The trail is interesting because you can see the incredible damage from the powerful heavy rains of 2017. Some of the road is completely blown out, so it takes extra time to navigate across the river and debris fields.
I can’t really recommend the road back towards Akizuki as it’s a long way back. If you’re like me, you’ll be racing against the dark. Luckily, there is a sidewalk for the last half of the road journey. Once I got on the sidewalk I could relax and enjoy the walk.
I got back to Akizuki in the dark and everything was closing up. The bus was still running and I hopped on it to start the trip back to Fukuoka.
My feet are burning, but it was totally worth it.
