About a month ago, I had planned a traverse from Hanno Station to Mt. Otakayama, finishing at Agano Station.
Back then, I ran out of water halfway and ended up descending at Mt. Tengaku.
This time, reflecting on that mistake, I prepared 3.5 liters of water and tried again.
I started off thinking,
“Alright, I’m going all the way to Otakayama today.”
While walking, I suddenly realized,
“I forgot my bear spray.”
But I figured it would probably be fine and kept moving forward.
Everything went smoothly up to Mt. Tounosu, but on the way to Mt. Daikoku, I encountered a man who had been stung by a bee.
He told me:
“There’s a beehive on the trail ahead, right at your feet. It’s dangerous.”
So I decided to turn back.
I considered taking a different route, but since I can come here anytime, I thought:
“What if I run into a bear?”
That worry wouldn’t go away, and combined with the beehive warning, I chose to retreat this time.
Safety always comes first.
This time, I also didn’t want to head home drenched in sweat, so I left a change of clothes in a coin locker at Hanno Station.
After descending, I picked it up and successfully refreshed myself at Okumusashi Ryokan.
The coin locker only accepts 100‑yen coins, and collecting five of them was surprisingly troublesome, so next time I’ll prepare them in advance.
After a nice bath, I wrapped up the day with a solo yakiniku dinner in Hanno — fitting, since it is Hanno.
I didn’t get anywhere near Mt. Otakayama,
but that doesn’t matter at all.
The yakiniku and beer made everything feel just right.
