Another rugged mountain in Gunma. There are 2 routes for climbing Tsunochi Yama. I took the otoko zaka (men’s route) for climbing and returned through the onna zaka, the easier route. The men’s route is a dotted line on map- so don’t attempt it causally. Following the mountain stream (shirozawa) trail crossed it a multiple time before climbing to the saddle. The pink ribbons are scant and requires use of route finding abilities.Once on the ridge the route flattens out a bit before you reach the base. The peak of Tsunochi looms above and looks intimidating. Some nearly verticals chains and ropes help you to gain elevation. Ground is slippery when wet or covered with fallen leaves so be extra careful. There is a tori and a small shrine at the top with almost no open views.Going down through Onna Zaka I continued on the ridge towards kengamine hoping to get some open view. This route again is an expert route marked as dotted line on map. Chains, ropes and exposed clean root holds to help you climb. The peak itself of covered by trees but just a few minutes away is an open area where you can see Asama kakushi right in front of you. Returning to the car park was a bit easier when the trail hits the forest road. It follows more or less the akazawa river. Yamano yu onsen ぐんま百名山 67
