I had been thinking about climbing Tenzan for a while, but wasn’t really sure about how to do it using public transportation. I thought it would be fun to finish the hike in Furuyu onsen. Today I finally made the trip.
I took the train out of Hakata and transferred in Tosu and Saga before arriving at Higashi Taku station at 7:05. 🚉
I got off the train and started up the road towards the mountains. There was a lot of road hiking involved, but I only saw a few cars, so it was more pleasant than I thought.😌
There is some woods hiking involved to reach the grey peak Kasagashirayama. I scaled the steep bank to get on the ridge, then followed it up.🌲🌲🌲 After reaching the summit, I followed a grassy forest road for a while. Then I took a short cut through the woods to get back on the main road.
The spring birds were singing in the blossoming trees. 🌸 🐦 🎶
I made it to the summit of Tenzan. It was my 500th summit registration on YAMAP.
After a lunch break on top, I headed across the ridge and followed the Kyushu nature trail to Furuyu onsen. It’s one of my favorite hot spring towns. A few years ago it seemed pretty sleepy, but it looks like it’s doing better these days. Some new shops have opened up and the town had a lot of visitors.
The baths at the Oncri hotel are wonderful. A rotenboro with mountain views is tough to top. The water temp is 38°, so you can soak for a long time while still enjoying the outdoors.
The last bus on Saturday leaves Furuyu onsen at 17:45.
This springtime weather is great for hiking!
