Today I ran my first 5k ever! 🥳

It was hot... but not too hot. Still, too hot for someone who wilts in the heat when exercising whenever it gets over about 18 degrees Celsius. (I think it was about 26?) 🥵

I started out strong, because the course was shady, then when we turned the corner into full sun... I wilted. Somehow I managed to finish anyway? I think our time was about 33 minutes, but I'm not sure.

It was kind of a thrill to start running in a big crowd. 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

It was a beautiful morning at Suttsu Bay. At 4:30 a.m. it was still pretty cool, so I did a lot better than on the last run. And we ran 5k without stopping... almost. I confess to taking a couple of pictures...

Such a beautiful spot for a run! Ocean, mountains, birds, wildflowers...

And it was 29 degrees, humid, and in full sun. If there hadn't been a breeze, I would have given up. Why did we think running in the middle of the afternoon was a good idea?

Today's run was 30 minutes of running, and the rest walking for warm up and cool down. I'm almost to 5k! Today we signed up for the Salmon Marathon... and to clarify, in Japanese, "marathon" just means long-ish running race. We will start with 5k. 🤣

I am helping to organize a flower study and tea event for my tea ceremony young people's group tomorrow. The location is Hamanasu no oka park and surroundings, so I came to check on some last minute details... and while I am at it, go for a run. The flowers look great. I'm sure my friends will enjoy them!

I intended to run on the seawall, but it was under construction, so I ran on the road until I got to the park. Because of the threat of rain, there was hardly anyone there... just me and the birds. 🥰

This is the first time to record a single activity diary with three sets of clothing. I started in running gear, changed to a skirt and blouse, and finally changed into a kimono.

I ran all the way around the Imperial Palace in Kyoto. It took 27 minutes... the longest I've ever run without stopping. Well, sort of. I took a couple of pictures. It was misty, which made the heat bearable.

On the way back, I walked past Konnichi-An (Urasenke headquarters) and got super excited that I get to go inside tomorrow... dressed quite a bit nicer.

The second part of my outing today was a tour of the Kimmoukaku gate and several tea rooms in the Daitokuji complex that are not open to the public. As a tea practitioner, this was a special treat. I got to see the famous statue of Rikyu as well as his grave, and see beautiful and carefully planned tea rooms, with explanation by a tea house architect. No photos allowed in most of these places, but at least I have a record of where I went. And for lunch, shojin ryouri (vegan temple cuisine)!

The last part of today's outside was a very hot walk in a kimono to the closest subway station, on the way to a dinner party.

Yes, there were lots of birds singing all around, hopping on the road. 🥰🐦🦆

There were also bugs. So many bugs. I wouldn't recommend going down to the wetland boardwalk (especially in shorts). It's also super overgrown, and I had an allergic reaction to all the grass. So I took my picture of the irises (which is why I went to the wetland at all) and got out of there as quickly as possible.

This was my first run with my husband. He kindly let me set the pace. This was also probably the longest I have ever run nonstop (20 minutes). I was pretty slow. But I got through it.

The church we attend is near Moerenuma park, so we thought it would be nice to go walking/running before church. After church we are usually hungry, and the park is crowded and hot. But it was nice and cool when we went. I combined my run with a bit of hiking training--two times up Moereyama and once up Play Mountain (yep... it's a dorky name).

I learned some things while running at Asahidake onsen this morning:
🏃‍♀️This was my first time running uphill in who knows how long. It was not a long run, but I was dying. I have also been doing previous runs at sea level. It seems this makes a pretty big difference.
🏃‍♀️I can run before breakfast without feeling queasy if I ate hotel kaiseki the night before and am therefore still full...
🏃‍♀️My running mini pack has a convenient pocket to hold the bear spray.
🏃‍♀️My running shoes are designed to let out sweat but not to keep out dew. Thankfully my new socks (yamatune running socks) dry quickly... and also provide good ankle support!

Yurigahara park is a super popular place on a Sunday afternoon. We ate our onigiri in the car waiting for a parking spot. Perhaps the wisteria and lilacs were drawing a crowd? Once we actually got into the park, we had a nice walk/run and enjoyed lots of flowers.

I restarted running (jogging) yesterday after taking the winter off. Today at Hamanasu no oka park I enjoyed birdsong and the fragrance of wildflowers during my run. The only problem was that it's not so easy to take pictures while running.

My friend told me that the wisteria at Maeda forest park were in bloom, so we went to see. Yep, definitely blooming. There were still some lilacs too. In the canal, there was one lonely duckling (with its mother), and we saw it napping... 😍🦆

I went for a jog for the first time this year. I didn't do too badly. I rewarded myself with ice cream.🍦

Just after we finished our ice cream, we saw a familiar looking person with a familiar looking dog... it was the friend who recommended we go to the park.
