そうだよ！カナダにも温泉がある！湯はかなり暑い。出る所は50℃だ。一番気持ちがいいところは波が温泉と混ざっているところだった。

最高な場所だけどアクセスが難しい。日本からの私達の道のりは
新千歳空港✈羽田空港✈シアトル🚙バンクーバー⛴ナナイモ🚙トフィーノ🚤Hot Springs Cove
です。長～い。でみ、その旅も色々な楽しみがある。

例えば、トフィーノからのボートに乗っている間、ラッコと2種類のクジラに出会った。🐳🥰景色もとてもきれい。ボートからのハイキングコースは原生林で美しい。

トフィーノにいる間、日本人は一人も会わなかったこと、びっくりした。

That's right, an onsen in Canada! The water is super hot, but the best spot is where onsen water and ocean water mix. 

You have to get there by boat from Tofino, which was scenic, not to mention that the ocean around Tofino is infested with otters and whales. And the walk from the dock to the onsen was also beautiful... old growth forest!

I was seriously surprised that I didn't meet a single Japanese person the whole time we were in Tofino area.

1933年（昭和8年）にカナダのバンフで開かれた太平洋問題調査会会議に、日本代表団団長として出席していた新渡戸稲造はこの地で倒れ、10月15日に71歳で永眠している。

マケンジービーチに早朝散歩。潮干だったので色々おもしろかった。

We took an early morning beach walk at Mackenzie Beach. The tide was out, so there were lots of interesting things to look at.

今日もトレイルランニング。今回は主人と弟と。昨日より長くて速かったかと思う。トレイルもビーチもとてもきれいだった。潮溜まりに覗いてみておもしろかった。

バンクーバー島のトフィーノに来ている。今日はずっと雨の予報が、早朝のみが降らない。弟とトレイルランニングした。私よりずっと早い。😅でも付き合ってくれた。

Tonquin Beach Trail はとてもきれい。でかい木々がいっぱいで海岸も美しい。毎日走りたいぐらい。トフィーノの町まで走ってホテルに戻ってご褒美にシナモンロールとコーヒーをいただいた。🥐☕

We are in Tofino on the west coast of Vancouver Island. It's supposed to rain all day, but early morning was still okay. I went running with my brother. He is much faster than I am... running zigzag. At least he wasn't running in circles around me. 😅

The trail was beautiful... lots of big trees and viewpoints over the beach. I would be happy to do this every day we are here. We ran all the way into town and onto the pier. Then back to the Middle Beach Lodge for cinnamon rolls and coffee.

主人と私は３年半バンクーバーに住んでいた。７年ぶりに遊びに行った。その時に参加した教会に礼拝を守ったり友達に会ったり公園の散歩をしたりした。楽しかった。

でもバンクーバーに住んでいた時、勉強ばっかりしていたので、残念ながら登山はほとんどできなかった。そして、エッグタルト、その時知らなかった。香港に行った時初めて知った。バンクーバーに香港人はいっぱい住んでいて私のためにエッグタルトを作ってくれている。🥧

My husband and I lived in Vancouver for 3 1/2 years, and haven't been back since 2018. We visited the church we attended then, walked in the park, and saw lots of friends. 

While living in Vancouver, we mostly studied, so we missed out on lots of things, like going hiking and eating egg tarts. We discovered egg tarts in Hong Kong, and there are many people from Hong Kong in Vancouver making egg tarts for me to eat.

カウアイ島の家族旅行、その6
ナパリ海岸のカララウ・トレール、ハナカピアイ滝

今日は停電から始まった。昨夜の暴風で木が電線を切った。だから、ごはんが炊けない？🍙なし？コンビニがなくて買えない。😱結局サンドイッチにした。最後の瞬間に電気が復帰できてコーヒーぐらいは淹れられた。よかった！☕

ハナカピアイビーチまでのコースは思ったよりずっといい状態だった。2008年に行った時はかなりやばかった。数か所に泥があった。雨だった滑るよねと思った。雨はちょっとだけ降ってギリギリセーフ。最初にハナカピアイ川を渡ってハナカピアイビーチに着いた。そこにおやつを食べながら気持ち良さそうに昼寝をしているハワイモンクアザラシを観察した。可愛い！💘

川を渡ることがこのコースのテーマでもチャレンジでもある。10回くらい？渡った。ある時は楽ちん、ある時はちょっと間が大きすぎる超滑りやすい石から石へジャンプしないと渡れない。とにかく、覚悟したほうがいいよ。パーティーの誰かが必ず滑って川に落ちる。母は何回か滑った。私は途中であきらめて登山靴を脱いでサンダルに履き替えて渡渉した。ただ、谷に入ってからは登山道は歩きづらくなった。川渡りは気持ち良くてもサンダルでの一歩一歩は集中してそろりそろりと進むしかない。足首も痛かった。疲れた。

やっと谷の裏まで来て滝が見えて...すごい。感動。こんなに美しい所が本当にあるのか。昨日の雨で滝の量が多くて崖が険しすぎてへこんでいる感じ。滝の下の池にみんな泳いでいた。私も入ろうとして寒くて寒くて...結局母と二人でつるつるの石に滑って落ちて入ってしまった。😅ちょっとだけ泳いだ。ハワイのくせにに寒い🥶。

登山口に戻って海にも泳いだ。それは旅行の再度の海水浴。明日北海道に帰るから。

晩ご飯はオパカパカというレストランでフィッシュタコスとクレームブリュレだった。食事を待っている間虹が現れた。

Family vacation in Kauai, part 6

The morning started with a power outage. Wind last night blew a tree down over the power lines. That meant no onigiri. 😱 There was just enough time to make coffee after the power came back on. (We are currently drinking POG co-fermented Columbian coffee.)

The first part of the trail, to Hanakapiai Beach, was well maintained (surprise!), with mud in a few places. It would have been slippery in the rain. Thankfully it didn't rain (much). After the first stream crossing, we stopped for snacks at the beach and watched a blissfully napping seal.

Speaking of stream crossings, there are many. Maybe ten or so? The locals would rather keep the crowds out, so they don't like to build bridges. Just be prepared: someone in your party will definitely fall in. My mom did. I suggest wearing water shoes or hiking sandals. I chose to change into flip flops after a couple of near misses and wade through the streams. Wading felt great. Hiking in flip flops on rough trail did not. My ankles did not like it. I had to take every single step with caution, which was tiring in itself because it took so much concentration.

The end of the valley, where the waterfall is? Spectacular. The cliffs are so steep they seem to be leaning in. The waterfall was full from the rain last night, and the pond was icy cold, but I managed to get in for a quick swim... or rather, after dithering on the edge for quite a while, Mom and I eventually fell in (slipped on the rocks) so that decided things. 

I also took a quick swim in the ocean at Ke'e Beach at the end of the hike. This was the last swim of the trip, since it was the last day of our trip.

We had dinner at Opakapaka (fish tacos, with creme brulee for dessert), complete with double rainbow.

The Nā Pali Coast State Park is a 6,175 acres (2,499 ha) Hawaiian state park located in the center of the rugged 16 miles (26 km) along the northwest side of Kauaʻi, the oldest inhabited Hawaiian island. The Nā Pali coast itself extends southwest starting at Keʻe Beach extending all the way to Polihale State Park. The na pali (high cliffs) along the shoreline rise as much as 4,000 feet (1,200 m) above the Pacific Ocean. The state park was formed to protect the Kalalau Valley.

私は鳥オタクだ。🦆Kilauea Lighthouseは有名なバードウォッチングスポットだ。今、渡り鳥がいっぱい集まっている。アカオネッタイチョウ、アカアシカツオドリ、オナガミズナギドリ、コアホウドリなどが見てた。ハワイガンもいた。灯台も景色も最高にきれい。雨も止んでくれた。

Family vacation in Kauai, part 3

I'm a bird nerd, so we had to visit this place. Right now there are many migrating birds in residence. We saw lots of tropicbirds, albatross, shearwaters, and red footed boobies. The lighthouse and scenery were also pretty great. Thankfully it stopped raining.

I realized that it's a lot easier to photograph birds in flight if I keep both eyes open... then I am less likely to lose sight of them.

カウアイ島の家族旅行、その２

今日は主人と弟と3人でハイキング。早く起きて寝坊助たちをそのまま寝かせておいて行った。早く行かないと暑くなる。南国だね。日焼け止めを忘れないでね。

午後は雨の予報だったのでその前に戻ろうとしていた。カウアイ島の赤い土が濡れると非常に滑りやすい。結局今日は雨じゃなくて暑さが問題。北海道の冬に慣れている。ハワイのこの暑さに弱い。そして、キャニオンだから、降りてからまた登る…大変。

カウアイ島に何回も来たことがあるにで、色々ハイキングや登山をしたことがある。でも、ワイメア・キャニオンは初めて。きれい！登山道は思ったより状態がよかったけど、あまり期待していなかった。ハワイの登山道はあまり良くないことが多い。

キャニオンのそこにワイメア川が流れている。そこにランチやおやつに丁度いいスポットがある。私達はおいしいシナモンロールを食べた。

Family vacation, part 2

Today I went hiking with my brother and my husband. We got up early and let the sleepyheads stay in bed as long as they wanted (because they weren't coming). One has to start early for these things because it's hot here. Don't forget the sunscreen.

We were trying to finish before rain started in early afternoon. I don't think there turned out to be very much, but you don't want to hike this trail in the rain. As my dad would say, it's a slip and slide. But, it turned out, the problem was heat more than rain. Hokkaido winter hiking has made us soft... it wasn't really that hot, it just felt hot. And with this hike, you go down first then have to go back up, in the afternoon, after it gets hot.

We have hiked quite a lot on this island over the years, but this is the first time we have hiked into the canyon. It's pretty nice! The trail was better than expected, which isn't saying much. There's a nice lunch spot sitting on rocks by the river. We had cinnamon rolls from Kalaheo Bakery. 

Waimea Canyon, also known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, is a large canyon, approximately ten miles (16 km) long and up to 3,000 feet (900 m) deep, located on the western side of Kauaʻi in the Hawaiian Islands of the United States. Waimea is Hawaiian for "reddish water", a reference to the erosion of the canyon's red soil.[1] The canyon was formed by a deep incision of the Waimea River arising from the extreme rainfall on the island's central peak, Mount Waiʻaleʻale, among the wettest places on earth.

家族旅行でハワイ州のカウアイ島に行って来ました！

マハウレプ・トレールは多分家族の8人で初めてのハイクだった。最初はね。4歳と8歳の甥っ子たちは飽きちゃって早く帰ったけど、弟と主人と3人で続いた。（このトレールは日陰がなくて朝早く行ったほうがいい。ただ、今日のメンバーの2人が遅くまで寝てしまった。😅）

面白い形の崖、美しいビーチ、岬や海にいい眺めでとてもいいところだ。Nene（ハワイガン）と他の鳥たちを色々見た。かなり人気で他のハイカーが多かった。

このトレールはさらに続いて一日中楽しめたかもしれないけど、今日は途中までだった。暑くてアイス食べたかった。

Family vacation time in Hawaii, #1!

This was perhaps the first hike (other than in the woods behind my parents' house) that my whole family did together... the first part, anyway. My nephews (ages 4 and 8) got hot and bored, but three of us (husband, brother, and me) continued on. (This hike doesn't have much shade, so it's better to start early. We didn't, since some members of our party slept in.) There were lots of crazy cliffs with overhang, beautiful beaches, nice views of ocean and headlands, etc. There were also lots of other hikers and people hanging out on the beach. We saw some nene geese and other birds. 

There's more of this trail on both ends and we probably could have enjoyed it all day... but it was hot and we wanted ice cream. 

リフエ（Lihue）はアメリカ合衆国ハワイ州カウアイ郡の町。カウアイ島東部に位置するダウンタウンであり、カウアイ郡行政の中心として機能する。人口約12,000人。カウアイ島を周遊する道路が整備されておらず、どこかへ赴く場合はリフエがその起点となるため、朝夕は激しいラッシュアワーに見舞われる。

カウアイ島🌊Mahaulepu Heritage Trail 

私達の教会のグループがワールド・ビジョンのチャリティー・ウォーキングに参加した。集めた金額できれいな水がない人たちのために井戸などが作れる。その人たちは平均6キロを歩いて水を取りに行くので私達は6キロも歩いた。その経験が分かるように主人は～18リットルを頭の上に運んだ。私はそこまでしなかったけど、3キロの所まで水は飲まなくて喉が渇いた。

Newcastle Beach Parkから元鉄道のトレールを歩いた。2羽の白頭鷲が見守ってくれていた。そして、ご褒美の懐かしいレインボーチップクッキーがおいしかった。

A group from our church took part in a fundraiser by World Vision to provide clean water for people who don't have it. Apparently the average distance people walk to get water is a 6 km round trip, so that's how far we walked. My husband even carried about 18 liters of water on his head to better understand the experience of the people we hope to help. I didn't carry water on my head, but I didn't touch my water bottle until after 3 km... and I got rather thirsty! 

We started at Newcastle Beach Park and walked along a former rail line that has been converted into a trail. We got lucky and saw two eagles roosting in a tree right above the trail! At the end, rainbow chip cookies... tastes like my childhood.

今週の3回目のマウント・サイエリアの登山だった。これより標高の高いところはまだ雪が残っている。

今回はママとパパと登った。全員Teneriffe Falls （テネリフェの滝）が初めてだった。春にかなりすごい。今日みたいな暑い日にちょうど良かった。

お昼はサンドイッチと紅茶にした。その後、ウクレレを出した。楽しかった！🌺🎶

This was our third hike this week from trailheads on Mt. Si Road. Hikes higher up are still snowed in. 

This time we went with my parents. None of us had been to Teneriffe Falls before. It's quite the waterfall, and a very nice place to be on a hot day.

We had sandwiches and tea... and when we were finished with that, we broke out the ukulele. 🌺🎶

ずっと会っていない従妹とお昼を食べた。ご主人も初めて会った。その後、母と主人と3人でシアトル日本庭園とワシントン・パーク樹木園を散歩した。日本庭園は珍しく無料に入れた。ラッキー！日本の祝日のためかな。鯉のぼりが飾られていた。

シャクナゲとツツジは咲いていた。日本庭園には山ツツジ。うちのツツジたちと同じ。元気にしているかな。会いたいな。

I had lunch with my cousin and met her husband for the first time. After lunch, mom and my husband and I went for a walk in the arboretum. The Seattle Japanese Garden was free admission today, so we went in. Koinobori were on display for children's day. Rhododendrons and azaleas were in bloom both in the garden and the arboretum, including lots of Japanese mountain azaleas, which we have in our garden back home in Hokkaido.

Camp Muir（キャンプ・ミューア）はマウントレーニアのクライマーたちが泊るキャンプだ。キャンプ・ミューアの先はクライマーの許可証が必要だ。私たちはクライマーじゃないから、ここまでだね。😅

眺めはとにかくすごい。今日は谷が雲海、山が晴れていた。周りの火山（Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Adams）が見えた。午前中が風が強くて晴れても雨🤨だったけど、午後は最高。

今日のメンバーは弟、主人、私。弟はバックカントリースキー、私と主人はスノーシューとチェインスパイクだった。マイスノーシューは残念ながら北海道に眠っているのでママとパパから借りた。坂にあまり役に立たないタイプ。😅弟はかなり待った。ごめんね。

パノラマポイントへの坂以外、優しいルートだった。ただ、高山度、長さ、ルート判断が難しいほう。気を付けないとクレバスが多い氷河に迷い込むこともあるらしい。

この3年間、北海道から出ていない。だから、3年間旭岳以上の標高に行っていない。そのせいで最後の～1.5㎞は長～く感じた。（GPSデータを見たら、別にペースが変わらなかった？不思議。）2500メートルを超えたらちょっとだるく感じたがまあまあ大丈夫。主人は頭痛だったが、おそから。それは雪がまぶしいから。

＊キャンプ＊ミューアだからアウトドアウクレレを持ってきて山にふさわしい歌を歌った。ランチはカップ麺、紅茶、コーヒー（石狩の徳光珈琲）。おやつはおにぎりと中華大福だった。その手作り梅干しは最高においしかった。

雪はやわらかかった。パノラマポイントからキャンプ・ミューアまでスノーシューを付けていた。下山の最初はつぼ足でジョギングだったが、ズボり始めたらやっぱりスノーシュー。

トークから雪崩を見た！氷河から氷が落ちた。すごい！その他雪崩の様子はなかった。

パノラマポイントからの下山はお尻そりだった。そりあったら速すぎて危ないかな。私はスノーシューでスピードを少しコントロールできた。険しくて速くて楽しかった。（ビデオあり）

晩御飯にとにかく塩っぱいものが食べたかった。弟んちに手作り中華料理をいただいた。ちょうおいしかった。甥っ子たちはスマホで撮ったパノラマ写真がおもしろいと思って、もちろん撮り方を見せた。🤣

エピローグ：変なところに日焼けしちゃった。主人はサングラスを買い直す。登山靴はびしょびしょ。

Camp Muir is the furthest you can go on Mount Rainier without climbing permit and technical skills... so probably as far as I will ever go. What a view! Sea of clouds in the valley, beautiful sunny weather up top, with a view of Rainier (obviously) and other volcanic peaks (Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Adams). There was weird rain out of a clear sky and high wind in the morning, but excellent conditions in the afternoon.

Today's party: my brother, my husband, and me. My brother was on touring skis, my husband and me on yaktrax and snow shoes (borrowed from my parents, unfortunately not much use on slopes). My brother had to wait for us a lot.

For the most part the route was a gentle slope, except for the steep grade up to Panorama Point. Much of the terrain would have been fine for beginners, except that the high elevation, the one steep place, the overall length, and the navigational difficulty (easy to wander onto a glacier) makes it more challenging. 

My husband and I hadn't been above 2291m (Asahidake) for these last three years--we never left Hokkaido during the pandemic. The last ~1.5 km seemed to take forever, but when I looked at the data, it seems that we maintained a steady pace the whole way. Over 2500m I felt sluggish but no major problems. My husband got a headache, but that may have been caused by the bright sun.

Since our goal was *Camp* Muir, we brought the outdoor ukulele and sang camp songs. At lunch time (a little late), we had tea, coffee (Tokumitsu), and cup ramen. Onigiri (furikake, umeboshi) and Chinese style daifuku made great snacks. Oh, did that homemade umeboshi taste great.

The snow was sloppy, especially in the afternoon. I put on snow shoes at Panorama Point, took them off for the top part of the descent and jogged down in just boots+yaktrax until I started sinking in to my thighs. We saw an avalanche, when a huge chunk of ice fell off a glacier. Wow! There were no signs of unstable snow where we were, though.

On the way down from Panorama Point, we took advantage of the sledding chute and slid down on our butts. No sled necessary; it probably would have been dangerously fast. I controlled my speed with my snow shoes. What a thrill! It was super steep and fast, with lots of bumps. (See video below)

Dinner: I wanted salt. We had homemade Chinese food at my brother's house. It was amazing. My nephews were very impressed with my cell phone panorama shots, so I had to show them how that was done...

My husband finished off everyone's leftover fries. We took a walk after lunch and admired the local birds. My husband laughed at me for taking pictures of the Canadian geese.
