I ran some of this route on the same day last year... except that I only managed to run 5k last year, and this year I ran over 10k! The season is off to a good start.

We saw lots of ducks and herons on the river, and heard uguisu from somewhere off in the forest, the first this year! Lots of white anemones (azuma ichige) were blooming along the trail. It's a lovely season in this part of the world.

A beautiful place, and good timing for autumn leaves, but we should have come in the morning while it was sunny. As usual, it was muddy. We found a friendly field mouse 🐁 and lots of mushrooms. 🍄

Usually when I go running, I get warm. That never happened today... it was not very warm outside. Time to start wearing more clothes.

Other than being cold and having half of an undigested pizza in my stomach (seriously?? I waited 2 hours!) the conditions were great... autumn colors and late afternoon light on the waves provided stunning scenery.

Suttsu bay running

After a couple of weeks off due to mystery foot pain which may or may not be related to running, I went running again. First snow-free run of the season! I ran a total of about 5.5km... not without some stops, because what a beautiful day... of course I wanted to look at things and take pictures. I even heard an uguisu singing.

This is a nice route along the Shubuto River. There are lots of birds, and beautiful scenery.

It was a beautiful morning at Suttsu Bay. At 4:30 a.m. it was still pretty cool, so I did a lot better than on the last run. And we ran 5k without stopping... almost. I confess to taking a couple of pictures...

Such a beautiful spot for a run! Ocean, mountains, birds, wildflowers...

And it was 29 degrees, humid, and in full sun. If there hadn't been a breeze, I would have given up. Why did we think running in the middle of the afternoon was a good idea?

Today's run was 30 minutes of running, and the rest walking for warm up and cool down. I'm almost to 5k! Today we signed up for the Salmon Marathon... and to clarify, in Japanese, "marathon" just means long-ish running race. We will start with 5k. 🤣

We did this one in 2020, about a week before we discovered YAMAP. Now we have officially climbed Karibayama. Last time this mountain was so-called bamboo grass hell. But last year (I think?) someone cut the grass for most of the route, and it was a lot better.

Today's stats:
Mamushi: 1
Frog: 3
Uguisu: chorus
Black fly: legion
Flowers: millions
Bear: 0 (but several poops, mostly dried out)
Snow: almost gone... the trail is almost entirely clear, and the rest of the snow should be gone in a few days.

The husband was not impressed, as he hates bugs and bamboo grass... and there were plenty of both. I thought it was a pretty decent hike now that the grass has been cut; he says he has had enough of Karibayama for one lifetime.

One more run before we head home. It was cold this morning... or at least, colder than it has been. As my husband put it, this warm autumn weather is kind of disconcerting. Anyway, I managed 22 whole minutes of running, and made it all the way to the end of the beach.

We enjoy the Utasai beech forest very much in the autumn: golden trees and lots of interesting mushrooms. Afterwards we had lunch at the Beech Cafe. 🤤

It was a beautiful warm day at Iwaonupuri. We packed sandwiches and had a picnic.

Already the leaves were gone at this elevation, but they were beautiful on the drive up. Thankfully the bugs weren't too bad up here. Snow from the weekend remained in places, and I even sank in up to my knees. I was glad to have gaiters.

Suttsu Bay is a lovely place... perfect to motivate someone who dislikes running. Perfect weather too! The only drawback (other than disliking running) is that due to a recent storm, there was driftwood and other debris on the road in some places.

Everyone seems to come here (Koboro Station and Buntaro Beach) in the spring, but it's pretty in the fall too! My husband and I enjoyed having the beach all to ourselves while we had tea and snacks.

Today it was kind of muddy and the stream, which we had to cross about twenty times it seemed, was pretty high. I regretted not bringing my poles, but my husband kindly lent me one of his. Thankfully I didn't fall in the stream.

Lunch: pizza from the Kuromatsunai michinoeki

We we on our way to Niseko for a meeting, but had some time to kill.

Husband: Hey, want to go to Shinsennuma?
Me: Sure, why not?

And so we did. I wasn't expecting snow, but it was snowing, and accumulating on the boardwalk. I didn't know whether to be annoyed or feel sorry for the tour bus hordes, wearing inappropriate shoes and slipping all over the place. It was pretty slippery. I think it was our first time to come here on the weekend. Is it always like this?

Afterwards, I had delicious sake-kasu-miso ramen for dinner(?) at the rest house, with a hojicha latte for dessert. Since it was cold, the onsen (yukichichibu) was fantastic.

Apparently the road closes in 2 days (October 23).

Today was the day when we were supposed to go home from our Golden Week vacation. But we got delayed... so we went hiking at Usuzan. It's a good thing too. The weather was perfect (sunny and warm, but breezy enough to be comfortable), the mountain cherry trees were in full bloom, and the forest floor was positively swarming with trilliums of various descriptions and other wildflowers. Birdsong rang out from a canopy of bright spring leaves, and to top it all off, the ocean was covered with a sea of clouds.

We walked up to the outer rim (gairinzan) viewpoint, where along with dramatic volcano scenery of Usuzan, we saw Yoteizan reflected in Lake Toya. We walked along the crater rim almost as far as the ropeway, then went back and had tea at the outer rim viewpoint again... because it was so nice there. ("Where is everyone?" said my husband. "Why aren't they here? It's so nice here.")

We had ice cream at the Michinoeki in Abuta, because after climbing all those stairs, we didn't want to put on masks 🥵 and go over to find out if there was ice cream at the top of the ropeway. Oh yes, there are stairs. Lots and lots of stairs.

The trail is very well maintained, but we recommend hiking poles, because it is steep in places.

Finally today the weather cleared up, and we went for a short hike. We did this hike last year on May 4, and once again, it did not disappoint. Early spring wildflowers in full bloom, sakura and magnolia blooming in the forest, birdsong, beach... and this time we got to Koboro Station just in time to welcome the morning train. (Four people with fishing gear got off and headed for the beach.) I even got to enjoy matcha on the beach.

The trail condition is pretty good. There's some mud, a couple of large fallen trees over the trail, and several stream crossings. We recommend bringing hiking poles.
