I moved onto the next peak in Chikuhoku village that is under 1000 meters….
Azakajoyama (安坂城山) (851 meters / 2791 feet) is located in north of Chikuhoku village, close to Omi village. There is a local shrine at the base of the mountain, and found the parking lot for visitors.
I went up to the local shrine on the left side of the site (the center stairway is closed due to safety concerns) and made my way around to the far right side (advice from another YAMAP climber). I followed the trail to the game fence, which was a little tricky to open and close, and then started up the mountain.
At times, the 8cm of snow on the ground made it easy for me to follow the footprints of other climbers. At other times, the trail disappeared and I found myself just climbing straight up the ridgeline, until I found the trail again. There are some really interesting things along the way, such as a torii, a large stone carving and multiple sites of old castle ruins.
At the top, I was able to find a commemorative stake, stone monuments and a small stone shrine, but was not able to locate a topstone. After a short time of walking around on the summit, I made my way down and through the game fence again. At the right side of the complex, there is a series of small wooden shrines with a lot of fox figurines.
A nice little climb to see new things and get some exercise…
