Fukan was an ascetic who opened up the Mount Ontake Otakiguchi and spread the Utake faith to the rest of the country. This is one of the graveyards where he is buried. Yoshigami (Kotani Kichiemon) was a guide to the ascetic Fukan, whose descendants opened a teahouse which is protected even to this day. In keeping with his will, Fukan's remains were divided to be scattered in four different locations. His last words were, “The remains/Buried in many villages/The dawn moon in the heart of Ontake.” This became the basis of the belief that spread after Fukan's death that the soul returns to Mount Ontake after death.
