Tamaki Shrine is located near the summit of Mt. Tamaki at an altitude of 1,076m, located at the southern end of the Omine Mountains, and has been handed down as the process of the Emperor Jimmu's eastern expedition.
It is said that the founding began in 37 BC when the 10th Emperor Sujin worshiped Hayatama God to protect the fire of the royal castle and disperse the devil.
Since ancient times, it has been regarded as one of the places for Kumano and Omine Shugendo from Kumano to Yoshino, and during the Heian period, it became a mixture of gods and Buddha and prospered as a sacred place called Tamaki Sansho Gongen or Kumanosanzan Okuin.
In the Edo period, the Betsutoji Komujoin was located. After that, due to the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the 4th year of Keio, the mixture of Shinto and Buddhism was abolished, and since then it has become Tamaki Sansho Okami and then Tamaki Shrine.
In the precincts, giant trees of cedar, which are said to be 3,000 years old and are designated as natural monuments, grow crowded, and in 2006, they were registered as a World Heritage Site as "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range".
