熊本県阿蘇市と高森町の境にあり、阿蘇五岳で最も東に位置する根子岳。阿蘇山を遠望するとその姿が容易に認識できるのは、この山のギザギザした山容のためである。根子岳には化け猫伝説があるが、まがまがしい姿を見ると、そんな話が生まれるのもうなずける。
最高点の天狗岩へは崩壊のため通行禁止のため、登山対象は天狗岩東方の東峰（標高1,408m）となる。東峰へは南面からの大戸尾根ルートと前原牧場ルート、北面ｋらの箱石釣井尾根ルートがあり、大戸尾根ルートと前原牧場ルートは初心者でも登頂可能。ただし、登山道は急斜面で滑りやすいうえ、熊本地震や大雨等で崩壊した箇所もある。やせ尾根では滑落事故も発生しており、要注意。

Mt.Nekodake is located in the borders between Aso City and Takamori Town as well as located in the easternmost part of the 5 peaks of Aso. Mt. Nekodake is easy to recognize due to its jagged shape. And according the folklore, there is a legend of ghost cat inside the Mt. Nekodake and one of the reasons is probably due to its misleading appearance from the mountain. The highest point of the peak, Tenguiwa is closed to the traffic due to collapsed, so the only possible climbing route is through the eastern peak (elevation 1408m) to the east of Tenguiwa. There are Oto ridge route from the south side, Maebaru ranch route from the east side, and Hakoishi Tsurii route from the north side to the east peak, and even beginners can climb the Oto ridge route and Maebatu ranch route. However, the mountain trail is slippery on steep slopes, and some parts have collapsed due to the Kumamoto earthquake or heavy rain. Be careful as slipping accidents have also occurred on thin ridges.

阿蘇山（あそさん）は、日本の九州中央部、熊本県阿蘇地方に位置する活火山。外輪山と数個の中央火口丘から成り、外輪山は南北25km、東西18kmに及び世界最大級の面積380㎢の広大なカルデラ地形（鍋型）を形成する。
2007年、日本の地質百選に「阿蘇」として選定された。2009年（平成21年）10月には、カルデラ内外の地域が巨大噴火の歴史と生きた火口を体感できる「阿蘇ジオパーク」として日本ジオパーク、世界ジオパークに認定されている。「日本百名山」の一座としても取り上げられている。
