We still had to pay the 500Yen parking fee. But if you drive up to the crater there is a toll. The parking fee also allows you to visit the area further down. If you are hiking then you don't need to drive right up to the crater. There may be other areas you could park but I think it is worth it as the cost of maintenance must be a lot.

It looks like good family hike. I went to Aso and tried to hike Nakadake and Takadake, but I couldn’t because of the eruption. I wanna try again:)おつかれさまでした！
