Despite the fact, the mountains in Sado island is merely 1000m, its highland offers variety of alpine plants which are usually found on the mountains of 2500m or more. Thanks to its unique geographical location and the warm current washing the seashore, the winter is less severe yet the summer is cooler. Consequently, hundreds of flower species blossom throughout the area. In addition, the large animals such as deers and boars cannot swim this far thus the vermin damage to these plants is inexistent. Due to complexity of changing various transportation from Tokyo, I have opted an organized tour. And this is my second and last day at Sado Isl.

佐渡島 Kare-e Shimizu(Kare-e spring water), is found merely 20 minutes of the descent from the said junction. This little stream though we had to cross afterwords, is said to be not only safe to drink but also extremely tasty. No wonder everybody dashed to scoop water in a cup or a bottle to quench one’s thirst.

佐渡島 Odamaki(Aquilegia) is today endangered by Fransu giku(Levcanthemum or Margueritae in french). The latter is declared a “Designated alien species” and the city of Sado tries to minimize the damage by cutting down Margueritae massively. It is rather rare to see wild Aquilegia grow in profusion.
